DIY: Cakestand!

I've had this idea since forever.. handmade cakestands are everywhere on Pinterest and craft blogs!
It also makes a great and fairly cheap birthday present. You can easily make one for about €4 and you can customize it in any way you want!

What you'll need:

1. A plate that is big enough to hold 12 cupcakes (keep in mind that when you make cupcakes, you almost always make a batch for 12 cupcakes). My plate is a little smaller but I didn't find a bigger one :(

2. A pretty wineglass or candle stick that will hold your plate

3. Strong glue

4. Spray paint

5. Stencil with a design you want to spray on your plate. This can be a letter, your full initials, a cupcake, a bird, anything that doesn't have too much sharp edges and bulges.

6. Old newspapers or an old table cloth.

The steps:

Spread your newspapers out on the floor (outside!) and start spray painting your plate and cup.
Make sure to keep a distance of about 15 cm (+- 6 inches) and let the spray-painted side dry for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Choose your stencil, print it and cut out the form you want on your plate. Wait to get your stencil on until your plate is completely dry!
For this step, it would be best to ask someone to give you a hand because if you do it by yourself, you'll probably get spray-paint underneath the edges.. And you wouldn't want that. That is what happened to me the first time.

Person 1 needs to hold the stencil's inner edges in place while the person 2 spray paints the gap. Person 1 will get spray paint all over his/her hands but if you want your plate to look gorgeous, you'll just have to endure this :) :) :) :) I have neon-orange painted nails because of this step.. haha..

For my stencil, I chose a picture of a bird. I put it in a Word-document, adjusted the size and printed it. Then I cut it out very carefully with my Stanley knife.
Note: I didn't cut out the legs and branch because it would have gotten very messy. I went for the simple no-legged bird shape.

Then wait for it to dry for 2 minutes until you take your stencil off.

Now the only thing left is to just glue the glass onto the plate and you're done!

It was hot - I made this cakestand in my bikini- haha
Such a flattering picture!

Now all I need is some (glutenfree) cupcakes to fill it up!

How do you like it ? Easy, right ?!
